Senate Speaker Orders Samburu Governor Lati Lelelit Escorted to Police Station

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has directed the Sergeant at Arms to escort Samburu Governor Lati Lelelit to the nearest police station.
The order was issued on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, during a Senate session. This followed Governor Lelelit’s failure to appear before the Senate’s County Public Accounts Committee despite being summoned.
Speaker Kingi expressed frustration over the governor’s repeated absence. He stated that the Senate will not tolerate defiance of its summons. The directive came after the Sergeant at Arms confirmed that Lelelit was not present as required. The committee had summoned him to answer audit queries regarding Samburu County’s finances.
The move has escalated tensions between the Senate and some county governors over oversight and accountability. It is part of a wider standoff, as several governors have been resisting Senate summons citing various concerns raised by the Council of Governors. Governor Lelelit now faces possible arrest and questioning by police. The Senate is expected to continue monitoring compliance with its summons as it pushes for greater accountability in county governments.
