Senior Energy Officials Arrested Over Alleged Procurement of Substandard Fuel

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested three top officials in Kenya’s energy sector over claims of importing and clearing substandard petroleum products.
The arrested individuals are Petroleum Principal Secretary Liban Mohamed, Kenya Pipeline Company Managing Director Joe Sang, and Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) Director General Daniel Kiptoo. A fourth official, identified as Simon Wafula, was also taken into custody.
The officials were detained at Gigiri Police Station in Nairobi for questioning. According to reports, they are suspected of approving the entry of fuel that did not meet the required quality standards. This development has raised serious concerns about the safety and reliability of petroleum products supplied across the country, especially at a time when the government has been reassuring the public about adequate fuel stocks.
The arrests come amid ongoing public anxiety over fuel quality and prices. Investigators are expected to examine the procurement processes, testing procedures, and regulatory approvals involved. The case highlights the need for strict oversight in the energy sector to protect consumers and maintain confidence in the country’s fuel supply chain. Further details are expected as the probe continues.
