Shocking Ambush Kills Mental Health Doctor in Nairobi.
A leading mental health researcher was killed in a carefully planned attack during her morning journey through Nairobi, leaving the scientific community reeling and authorities racing to identify those responsible.
Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, director of the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health, lost her life in what investigators believe was a deliberate hit carried out in broad daylight. The incident has drawn intense focus from multiple security agencies as they work to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the sudden loss of a respected scholar from the country.
Witnesses recounted how a Toyota Prado was already positioned at the junction of Mbagathi Link Road and Mawenzi Road when the ride-hailing car carrying Dr Mutiso pulled up alongside it around nine in the morning. Moments later a motorcycle carrying three individuals arrived, and one of them fired two shots at close range into her head before the attackers sped away on the motorcycle while the Prado also fled the scene. The driver of the ride-hailing vehicle immediately drove the wounded researcher to Kenyatta National Hospital’s emergency centre in a frantic bid to seek medical help.
Upon arrival doctors declared her dead, prompting homicide detectives and forensic teams from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to secure the vehicle at the hospital. Ballistics experts recovered two spent cartridges from inside the car, which has been held as crucial evidence, while officers also began examining mobile phones belonging to both Dr Mutiso and the driver in an effort to map their movements and contacts in the hours leading up to the shooting.
A significant thread in the inquiry involves earlier warnings Dr Mutiso had shared with police. She had reportedly informed officers at Kilimani Police Station about direct threats against her life, after which the case was transferred to Satellite Police Station under the Dagoretti Division for further handling. Investigators are now examining whether those prior complaints connect to the fatal attack.
Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin confirmed that the probe has reached an advanced stage even as the suspects remain free. The ride-hailing driver is being held for questioning while closed-circuit television recordings are reviewed to track the motorcycle and Prado. Detectives have also visited the researcher’s residence in Riara to speak with her husband and professional colleagues, and her body now awaits a post-mortem examination at the Kenyatta National Hospital mortuary as efforts continue to establish a clear motive.
