Members of the Siaya County Assembly have started the process to remove Governor James Orengo from office.

They accuse his administration of failing to carry out important development work even though money was set aside in the current budget. During a recent session in the assembly, Central Gem Ward MCA Sylas Madingu pointed out that many areas across the county have seen little or no progress on promised projects. He said procurement for most approved work has not been completed, despite an earlier agreement that all projects should have been put out to tender by January 2026.

With only about two months left in the financial year, the delays have left many projects untouched. These include the construction and repair of roads, water supply systems, early childhood development centres, and a large water project that was publicly announced but has not moved forward to the stage of buying materials or hiring contractors. Madingu noted that residents in the wards are becoming increasingly unhappy and are directing their anger at the MCAs, who feel pressured to act because the county executive has not delivered as expected.

The Speaker of the Siaya County Assembly, George Okode, has taken the concerns seriously. He directed the county executive to give a formal response and has asked top officials, including chief officers and those in charge of procurement, to appear before the assembly. They will be required to explain the reasons for the slow pace and provide clear timelines for when the projects will start. This step aims to ensure accountability and better service delivery to the people of Siaya.

The move comes at a sensitive time for Governor Orengo, who has been active in criticising the national government on various issues. Some political voices, including Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi, have advised the MCAs to drop the impeachment plans. Atandi suggested that any decision about Orengo’s leadership should be left to voters in the 2027 general elections rather than through removal from office now, as it could distract from focusing on actual development work. The situation remains tense, with the assembly expected to discuss the matter further in the coming days.
