Sniffer Dog Uncovers Heroin at Isebania border
A detection dog working at the Isebania One Stop Border Post in Migori County has thwarted an attempt to smuggle narcotics into the country.
During a routine security check, the animal signalled strongly beside a bag belonging to a traveller arriving from Tanzania, prompting officers to examine the luggage more closely. The alert led to the discovery of carefully concealed packages that later tested positive for heroin.
The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Taiwanese national Wang Hsiang-hui, was taken into custody on the spot. Inside the flagged bag, Anti-Narcotics Unit officers found 26 tightly wrapped capsules containing a brown powdery substance. The total weight of the material came to approximately 18.26 grams, and preliminary field tests confirmed it was heroin.
Wang had been attempting to enter the country when the dog’s reaction brought his journey to an abrupt halt. Officers moved quickly once the animal froze and indicated a positive hit, ensuring the package was secured as evidence while the traveller was detained for further processing. He remains in police custody awaiting formal charges.
Authorities described the interception as a clear demonstration of the effectiveness of canine units at key entry points. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations reiterated its determination to combat drug trafficking and other cross-border crimes by working closely with partner agencies. Officials stressed that protecting the nation’s borders remains a priority in order to shield communities from the harm caused by illicit narcotics.
The successful operation at Isebania adds to ongoing efforts to tighten security along the frontier with Tanzania. By combining trained detection dogs with rapid response from specialised units, border teams continue to disrupt attempts to move illegal substances, sending a strong message that such activities will face firm resistance.
