Sonko Rewards Junior Starlets with Sh1 Million for World Cup Feat

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has awarded Kenya’s Junior Starlets Sh1 million following their impressive qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The donation was made during an impromptu harambee to celebrate the team’s historic achievement. Sonko praised the players and technical bench for their hard work, discipline, and determination that made the nation proud on the international stage.
The Junior Starlets secured their spot after defeating South Africa 3-1 in the second leg of the final qualifier at Nyayo National Stadium, sealing a 5-1 aggregate victory. This marks Kenya’s second consecutive appearance at the global tournament, set to be held in Morocco later this year. The team, coached by Mildred Cheche, will look to build on their experience from the previous edition.
President William Ruto also congratulated the squad, expressing pride in their performance and pledging full support. “You have made us very proud. I love you guys; you have made our country proud,” he said during a video call. The qualification has been hailed as another milestone for women’s football in the country, highlighting growing investment in young talent.
Sonko described the cash reward as motivation for the young footballers as they prepare to represent Kenya in Morocco. The success of the Junior Starlets continues to inspire many, showcasing the potential of girls’ sports and the bright future of Kenyan football on the continental and global stage.
