Speaker Wetangula Meets Pope at Vatican Audience
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula attended a General Audience at the Vatican presided over by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV.
He described the gathering as a meaningful occasion of reflection, fellowship and goodwill that brought together faithful from many nations. The Speaker noted that participants received the Pope’s message focused on peace, hope and service to humanity.
“I had the honour of attending the General Audience at the Vatican, presided over by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV,” Wetang’ula said. He added that the event provided space to consider the lasting values that bind people and nations, among them peace, compassion, dignity and a collective effort to create a better world. “This was a moment of reflection, fellowship and goodwill as we joined faithful from across the world to hear the Holy Father’s message of peace, hope and service to humanity,” he continued.
The Speaker emphasised that the audience also allowed those present to strengthen ties of fellowship and reaffirm the importance of solidarity. He pointed to the shared human principles that transcend borders and support constructive relations among countries. Such gatherings, he suggested, reinforce the moral foundations needed for lasting cooperation.
Wetang’ula was accompanied by Members of Parliament Peter Kaluma, John Bwire, Lydia Haika, Katana Kahindi and Paul Abuor. The group was further joined by Ambassador Rose Sumbeiywo, Deputy Head of Mission at the embassy to the Holy See in Rome. Their presence underscored the parliamentary and diplomatic dimension of the visit.
In remarks following the audience, the Speaker restated the country’s dedication to deeper international engagement built on mutual respect, open dialogue and common values. The encounter at the Vatican forms part of ongoing efforts to nurture partnerships that promote understanding and collaborative progress on the global stage.
