Standard Group CEO Says Government Owes Them Over Ksh1.2 Billion
The Standard Group CEO, Chaacha Mwita, has hit back at the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) over plans to revoke six of the company’s broadcasting licences.
Speaking on Friday, 27 March 2026, Mwita explained that the media house is struggling to pay its regulatory fees because the government itself owes The Standard Group more than Ksh1.2 billion.
“If the Government paid what it owes us, we would have settled our regulatory obligations long ago,” said Chaacha Mwita. He pointed out that the huge debt from the government has made it difficult for the company to clear the Ksh48.87 million owed to the Communications Authority for licence fees and the Universal Service Fund levy.
This statement comes just hours after the CA issued a notice threatening to cancel the licences of Radio Maisha, Spice FM, Vybez Radio, KTN News, Berur FM, and KTN Burudani. Many people see this as part of the growing tension between the government and some sections of the media. The Standard Group says it is ready to negotiate but insists the government must first settle its own debts. The matter is now being closely watched as it could affect several popular radio and TV stations in Kenya.
