Students Injured in Panic at University of Kabianga Lecture Theatre After Falling Debris

A frightening incident took place on April 13, 2026, at the University of Kabianga when a piece of mortar and finishing material detached from an upper floor slab in a four-storey lecture theatre block.

The debris fell onto the third-floor area while classes were underway, creating sudden alarm among the students inside. Fearing that the entire building might collapse, many students rushed toward the exits in panic. This led to a chaotic stampede, with some learners jumping from the third floor and lower levels to the ground outside, resulting in several injuries including fractures.

Reports indicate that at least 27 students were hurt during the rush to safety. The injured were quickly taken to nearby health facilities, mainly Kericho County Referral Hospital, where they received medical attention and are now recuperating. University officials acted promptly to assist the affected students and ensure they got the care they needed. Ambulances were used to transport those who required hospital treatment following the scare.

Vice Chancellor Prof Eric Koech issued an official statement confirming the event and expressing regret over what happened. He noted that the injured students were being treated at the county referral hospital and wished them a speedy recovery. The vice chancellor also reassured the university community, parents, and the public that the safety of students and staff remains a top priority. He promised that a full safety assessment would be carried out on the lecture theatre building before it is allowed to reopen for use.

This unfortunate occurrence has raised fresh concerns about the condition of infrastructure at higher learning institutions in the country. While lectures and other activities may continue in other parts of the campus, the affected block will stay closed until thorough checks are completed. The university has called for calm as investigations and follow-up actions are undertaken to prevent similar incidents in the future. Students and staff have been urged to remain vigilant while the necessary reviews take place.
