Tanzania President Suluhu Cuts Her Motorcade to Four Cars Amid Fuel Crisis

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has reduced her official motorcade to a maximum of four vehicles as part of measures to save fuel during the ongoing shortage.

She made the announcement on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, while speaking at a swearing-in ceremony for new government officials at State House in Dodoma. The president explained that only her personal vehicle, a police escort, and a backup car would remain in the main convoy, while all other accompanying officials would now travel together in one bus.

The decision comes as Tanzania faces rising fuel prices and supply challenges caused by the recent conflict in the Middle East, which has disrupted global energy markets. Fuel costs in the country have increased by about one-third since March, putting pressure on both government and household budgets. President Suluhu urged all public institutions to follow her example by cutting down on unnecessary vehicle use and reducing overall fuel consumption. She noted that large convoys with many separate cars waste resources that could be better used elsewhere.

This move is seen by many as a practical step to show leadership and promote careful spending during difficult times. In the past, presidential trips often involved long lines of vehicles that caused traffic disruptions. By limiting the number of cars and grouping officials in a single bus, the government hopes to set a new standard for efficiency. The president called on other state organs to adopt similar cost-saving practices as the country works to manage the effects of the global fuel situation.
