Taxi Driver Arrested in Brutal Killing of Gospel Singer
Police in Kenya have arrested a taxi driver in connection with the horrific murder of gospel singer Racheal Muthoni Wandeto.
The suspect, identified as Josiah Njeru Njiri, was a regular customer of the artist and is set to appear in court soon. Racheal succumbed to severe burns at Kenyatta National Hospital after being doused with petrol and set on fire, a crime that has shocked the nation and reignited debates on violence against women.
The arrest comes amid growing public outrage and protests by women’s groups demanding stronger action against gender-based violence and femicide. Advocates highlighted alarming statistics showing multiple cases reported weekly, with young women disproportionately affected. Racheal’s death has become a rallying point, with demonstrators marching through Nairobi streets to call for justice and an end to treating such tragedies as mere numbers.
Adding complexity to the case is the victim’s visible political loyalty, including a tattoo of President William Ruto, which has drawn the tragedy into political discussions and accusations. However, Racheal’s family has urged caution, refusing to let her memory be politicized and instead trusting investigators to uncover the full truth without bias. They emphasized focusing on justice rather than speculation.
This latest incident underscores the urgent need for decisive measures to address rising cases of violence against women across Kenya. As the suspect faces arraignment, many hope the case will prompt meaningful reforms and heightened awareness. For now, it serves as a painful reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by women, even those who lived vibrant public lives through their art and convictions.
