TIFA : Gachagua Should Back Opposition Candidate to Challenge Ruto in 2027

A recent survey indicates that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua stands a stronger chance of influencing the 2027 presidential race by supporting a unified opposition candidate rather than running himself.

According to the TIFA poll, nearly two-thirds of respondents believe this strategy offers the best path to unseating President William Ruto. The findings highlight the fragmented nature of opposition support and Gachagua’s regional influence

The poll shows President Ruto leading with around 24 percent support, while opposition figures like Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Fred Matiang’i, and Kalonzo Musyoka trail behind with varying levels of backing across different regions. Many Kenyans remain undecided, creating opportunities for strategic alliances. Gachagua maintains strong popularity in the Mt Kenya area, where his potential endorsement could sway significant votes.

Public sentiment also reveals divided views on the current broad-based government, with more respondents opposing it than supporting the arrangement. The survey further points to challenges in voter registration, particularly among younger citizens lacking necessary identification documents.

As political realignments continue ahead of the general election, the TIFA results underscore the importance of opposition unity. Gachagua and other leaders may need to weigh these insights carefully when shaping their strategies for the coming year in the country’s evolving political landscape.
