Tragic Collision Claims Two Lives as Trucks Engulfed in Flames on Nairobi-Mombasa Highway

A devastating early morning accident on the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway claimed the lives of two individuals and left one other seriously injured when two trucks collided and burst into flames.

The incident unfolded around 4 a.m. in the Mto Mawe area (also reported near Green Park Estate in Athi River, Machakos County), where one lorry rear-ended another as both were heading toward Nairobi. The forceful impact triggered explosions and a massive inferno that quickly consumed the vehicles, leading to the deaths—likely including drivers or crew members—and sending one survivor to hospital for urgent treatment.

Emergency responders, including firefighters from Machakos and Nairobi counties, rushed to the scene to battle the raging blaze, but the operation faced criticism for delays. A long-distance driver and eyewitness, Anthony Mwangi, lamented the slow arrival of help, noting that quicker intervention might have salvaged at least one of the containers involved. Machakos County police commander Monica Kimani confirmed the crash and casualties, as authorities worked to clear the wreckage and restore normal flow on the critical transport corridor.

The fiery wreck caused a severe traffic jam stretching several kilometers and lasting over five hours, disrupting travel for countless motorists and highlighting ongoing safety concerns on Kenya's major highways. This latest tragedy underscores the persistent risks faced by drivers on the Nairobi-Mombasa route, where heavy truck traffic and occasional mechanical failures or driver fatigue often lead to catastrophic collisions. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause and prevent similar incidents in the future.
