Tragic Floods Claim 10 Lives in Nairobi After Torrential Overnight Downpour

Heavy rains that battered Nairobi throughout Friday night into Saturday morning unleashed severe flooding across the Kenyan capital, resulting in the tragic loss of 10 lives.

According to Nairobi Police Commander George Seda, eight individuals perished after being swept away by rapidly rising waters, with several trapped inside vehicles that were carried off by the powerful currents. The remaining two deaths were caused by electrocution amid the chaotic conditions brought on by the deluge.

The relentless downpour overwhelmed the city's drainage systems, submerging numerous residential areas, informal settlements, and major roadways. Neighborhoods such as Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Kibra, Mathare, Embakasi, South B, and others experienced significant inundation, while key routes including parts of Mombasa Road, Thika Superhighway, and Lang’ata Road became impassable. At least 71 vehicles were stranded or trapped in the floodwaters, leading to widespread traffic chaos and stranding many residents overnight.

Emergency services, including the Kenya Red Cross Society and military units, mobilized swiftly to conduct rescue operations, successfully saving several people from precarious situations. Authorities have warned that the death toll may increase as search efforts persist in the hardest-hit zones. The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecasted continued heavy rainfall, urging heightened vigilance against further flooding and disruptions. A high-level coordination meeting among national disaster agencies was convened to streamline response and recovery efforts.
