Tragic Road Accident Claims Lives of Three Police Officers and One Civilian on Matuu–Mwingi Highway

A devastating accident along the Matuu–Mwingi Road in Machakos County claimed the lives of three police officers and one civilian on Sunday evening, February 15, 2026.

The patrol vehicle, a Land Cruiser from Nguutani Police Station, lost control and rolled multiple times near Mwatungo Primary School, just a few kilometers from Kithyoko market. The vehicle was transporting four officers and the civilian at the time of the crash.

One officer perished at the scene, while the second succumbed to injuries shortly after arriving at Kithyoko Level Three Hospital. The third officer was rushed to Matuu Level Four Hospital but died upon arrival, along with the civilian who also passed away at the facility. A fourth police officer survived the ordeal and remains in stable condition receiving treatment at Matuu Level Four Hospital.

The incident occurred at a notorious blackspot that has seen previous fatal crashes, including one last week where a secondary school teacher died after losing control of his motorcycle, leaving his wife injured and still under care. Efforts to obtain an official comment from the Migwani police commander were unsuccessful, as the officer requested additional time to confirm the details of the tragedy. This accident highlights ongoing road safety concerns on this stretch of highway.
