Tragic South Sudan Plane Crash Claims 14 Lives, Including Two Kenyan Nationals

A small passenger aircraft crashed in South Sudan on Monday, leaving no survivors among the 14 people on board.

The incident happened shortly after the plane took off from Yei on a domestic flight heading toward the capital, Juba. Authorities reported that the aircraft came down roughly 20 kilometres southwest of Juba. The news has sent shockwaves through both South Sudan and Kenya, where the loss of two citizens has been deeply felt.

The flight was operated by CityLink Aviation using a light aircraft. It departed in the morning but lost contact with air traffic control about half an hour later. On board were 13 passengers and one pilot. Among the passengers were 12 South Sudanese nationals and two Kenyans. Officials from the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority have confirmed that everyone perished in the accident. Teams have been sent to the crash site to begin a full investigation into what went wrong.

Early reports suggest that difficult weather conditions, such as low visibility, may have played a role in the tragedy. However, authorities have stressed that it is too early to reach firm conclusions and that a thorough probe is necessary to establish the exact cause. Families of the victims are being contacted, and support is being arranged for those left behind. The loss of life in a single domestic flight has highlighted the risks involved in air travel within the region.

This sad event has reminded many of the challenges facing aviation safety in parts of East Africa. While air transport is vital for connecting remote areas, incidents like this bring urgent questions about operating standards during poor weather. Kenyan officials are expected to work closely with their South Sudanese counterparts to identify the two nationals and assist their families. As the investigation continues, thoughts remain with all those mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of loved ones.
