Trans Nzoia County Workers Stage Peaceful Protest Over Two-Month Salary Delays

Several trade unions representing county employees in Trans Nzoia on Tuesday marched through the streets of Kitale town to the county governor’s office, where they voiced strong frustration over unpaid salaries stretching back nearly two months.

The workers, who have continued to report for duty and deliver essential public services, demanded that the county government act urgently to clear the arrears so they can meet their basic needs. The demonstration remained peaceful but firm, reflecting the growing hardship faced by families unable to pay rent, school fees, or access medical care due to the delay.Workers’

Eliud Nabimba, the branch secretary of one of the unions in Trans Nzoia, addressed the gathering and pointed out that according to guidelines from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), workers are entitled to their salaries along with other allowances starting from July 2024. He stressed that the delay has caused unnecessary suffering and urged the county administration to release the funds without further excuses.

Nabimba further warned that if the county government fails to address their grievances promptly, the workers will have no choice but to escalate their action by paralysing operations in all public offices until their demands are fully met. He called on Governor George Natembeya’s administration to prioritise the welfare of its employees, noting that continued delays could severely affect service delivery across the county.

The protest comes amid ongoing financial challenges facing many county governments in Kenya, with workers appealing for quick intervention to restore normalcy and motivation in the public workforce. Residents and local leaders are now watching closely to see how the county executive responds to these pressing concerns.
