Trans Nzoia Doctors Call Off Strike After Securing Promotions and Job Security Deal

Doctors in Trans Nzoia County have suspended their planned industrial action following a breakthrough agreement with the county government.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) had issued a strike notice on February 4, 2026, citing unresolved issues including delayed promotions, unfavorable employment terms, and concerns over medical insurance coverage. Intensive negotiations between KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, along with other officials, resulted in a signed deal that addresses these grievances and averts disruption to healthcare services.
Under the terms of the agreement, the county committed to promoting 22 doctors from Job Group N to Job Group P by March 17, 2026, in alignment with County Public Service Board timelines. Doctors in Job Group P who had already been interviewed will advance to Job Group Q on the same date. Additionally, all outstanding promotions in higher Job Groups Q, R, and S are to be finalized within 90 days from February 17, 2026, with corresponding salary adjustments. To bolster job security, 12 doctors currently on contract terms will be converted to permanent and pensionable employment by March 31, 2026.
The deal also reaffirms the validity of the existing medical insurance cover for doctors, with assurances that a new comprehensive policy will be secured before the current one expires. Dr. Davji Atellah described the agreement as a result of "unity, resolve, and structured engagement," while emphasizing the union's vigilance in monitoring full implementation within the stipulated timelines. With the strike now called off, normal operations at county health facilities are expected to resume without interruption.
