Two Shot Dead as Fuel Protests Turn Deadly in Western Kenya

Two people were shot dead and two others seriously injured during violent clashes between police and protesters in Kakamega town on Monday.

The deaths occurred as anti-fuel price demonstrations escalated into running battles along the Kakamega-Kisumu highway. One youth was shot in the head while a middle-aged man was hit multiple times in the back as security forces tried to disperse crowds blocking roads and lighting bonfires.

The unrest has completely paralysed public transport across Kakamega, Bungoma, and Busia counties. Matatu operators joined the nationwide strike, leaving major highways deserted and bus parks empty from early morning. Youths barricaded roads with stones and burning tyres, forcing businesses to close and schools like Kakamega Primary to shut down indefinitely as worried parents rushed to collect their children.

Witnesses accused police of using excessive force, with one injured tuk-tuk driver describing how officers opened fire after protesters ran past his work area. The protests stem from deep anger over the latest sharp increases in petrol and diesel prices, which operators say are pushing many out of business. Local leaders and residents are calling on President William Ruto to intervene urgently and ease the burden on citizens already struggling with high living costs.

As tension remains high with security forces intensifying patrols, the deadly events in Western Kenya highlight the growing national frustration over fuel prices. The government faces mounting pressure to address the crisis amid the ongoing matatu strike and protests spreading across the country. Many hope for swift dialogue to prevent further loss of life and restore normalcy before the situation spirals out of control.
