Uganda Discharges Last Confirmed Ebola Patient

Uganda’s Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi has presented a certificate of recovery to the final Ebola survivor discharged from the isolation unit at Mulago National Referral Hospital.
This significant event signals a major milestone in the country’s handling of the Bundibugyo strain outbreak, leaving no active confirmed cases nationwide. The discharge initiates the World Health Organization’s mandatory 42-day countdown toward declaring Uganda officially Ebola-free, provided no new infections are reported during this observation period. Health authorities remain vigilant to ensure sustained success.
The outbreak response demonstrated strong coordination and medical care, with 18 out of 20 confirmed patients making full recoveries. Sadly, two lives were lost during the period, underscoring the seriousness of the disease despite the high survival rate achieved through timely interventions. Dr. Baryomunsi praised the dedication of healthcare workers and support systems that contributed to containing the spread and facilitating recoveries. The milestone brings relief to communities affected by the outbreak and highlights effective public health measures in place.
As the 42-day countdown begins, Uganda’s health officials will continue enhanced surveillance and community education to prevent any resurgence. The Bundibugyo strain’s management has been closely monitored regionally, with lessons learned poised to strengthen future preparedness across East Africa. Citizens and international partners have expressed optimism as the nation edges closer to the all-clear declaration. This progress reinforces confidence in Uganda’s capacity to tackle infectious disease threats.
The successful containment serves as an inspiring example of resilience and scientific response in the face of public health challenges. With the last patient now reintegrating into society, focus shifts to long-term recovery support and maintaining robust systems to safeguard against similar outbreaks. Uganda’s journey from active cases to potential Ebola-free status stands as a testament to collective efforts in protecting public health across the region.
