Uganda Forges Ahead with Historic $4 Billion Oil Refinery to Transform Energy Landscape
Uganda has taken a monumental step forward by greenlighting its ambitious $4 billion oil refinery project, a development poised to revolutionise the nation’s energy sector and mark a new era of self-reliance.
Long dependent on imported petroleum products, the East African country is now set to harness its vast domestic oil reserves, which stand at an estimated 6.5 billion barrels in place with up to 2.2 billion barrels deemed recoverable. This strategic move not only signals strong government commitment but also promises to end decades of vulnerability to global fuel price fluctuations, positioning Uganda as a regional energy powerhouse.
Once operational, the refinery will have the capacity to process 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day, directly powering local industries, generating substantial new revenue streams for the national economy, and catalysing the construction of supporting infrastructure including pipelines, storage facilities, and water systems.
