Ugandan Man Faces Trial for Stabbing Four Toddlers to Death at Kindergarten

A Ugandan man named Christopher Okello Onyum, aged 38, has gone on trial for the brutal killing of four young children at a kindergarten in Kampala.

The tragic incident took place on April 2, 2026, at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre in the Ggaba area. The children, aged between 15 months and two and a half years, were attending the facility, which supports vulnerable and malnourished toddlers. The attack left the community in deep shock and sorrow.

According to court proceedings that began on April 13, 2026, Onyum is accused of stabbing the four toddlers to death. A staff member who witnessed part of the attack described how she first thought the man was simply beating a child. When she questioned him, she saw one victim, identified as Kaisha, lying against a wall in a pool of blood. The suspect then quickly grabbed another child with a knife in hand. The staff member tried to stop him by throwing a child’s bicycle at him, but he turned on her before fleeing. Parents of the victims also gave emotional testimony in court, with one mother fainting after describing the heartbreaking news she received about her son.

Onyum has reportedly confessed to the killings, claiming he carried them out as a form of “human sacrifice” in the hope of becoming rich. However, when formally charged with four counts of murder in court held at the Ggaba Community Church Grounds in specially set-up tents, he pleaded not guilty. The trial was adjourned until April 15, 2026, to allow further proceedings. Prosecutors believe the attack may have been planned over several days, and the suspect was arrested while trying to escape the scene.

This horrifying event has drawn widespread attention across Uganda and beyond, raising questions about safety in early childhood centres. The case continues to unfold in court, with many awaiting justice for the innocent young lives lost. Families of the victims and the wider community continue to mourn, hoping the legal process will bring some measure of closure. Authorities have assured the public that the matter is being handled with the seriousness it deserves.
