Wamalwa: I am ready to support Edwin Sifuna’s presidential bid

Eugene Wamalwa has signaled strong willingness to back Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna in the race for Kenya’s top seat.

The Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader made the remarks during a recent interview, stating he would readily set aside his own presidential plans if Sifuna emerges as a formidable contender. This gesture of unity highlights growing efforts among opposition figures to consolidate around promising candidates ahead of 2027. Wamalwa’s comments reflect a pragmatic approach focused on defeating the incumbent administration.

Speaking on Herman Manyora’s podcast, Wamalwa emphasized that both the united opposition and the Linda Mwananchi movement are aligned under the “Wantam” banner. He expressed readiness to make personal sacrifices to ensure this coalition succeeds in its goal of changing the current regime. According to him, the different camps will eventually sit down to select one strong candidate capable of challenging President William Ruto. This collaborative spirit aims to avoid splitting votes and maximize chances of victory.

The development comes amid Wamalwa’s ongoing efforts to court Sifuna into joining DAP-K. He revealed that his party’s secretary general, Eseli Simiyu, has agreed to step aside so Sifuna can assume the role if he faces challenges in his current party. This outreach demonstrates Wamalwa’s belief in Sifuna’s political potential and popularity. Such moves suggest deeper strategic realignments within opposition ranks as parties prepare for the intense political season ahead.

As Kenya’s political landscape heats up, Wamalwa’s position adds momentum to discussions about opposition unity. His willingness to support a younger, dynamic leader like Sifuna could inspire similar concessions from other principals, including Rigathi Gachagua. The coming months will test whether these alliances can translate into a cohesive front capable of mounting a serious challenge. For now, the message from Wamalwa is clear: unity and sacrifice will be key to realizing their shared vision.
