Winnie Odinga has declared her intention to contest the Nairobi senatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, signalling a new chapter in her political career.

The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) member made the announcement on October 15, 2026, during a memorial marking one year since the death of her father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Winnie also called on young people to actively participate in politics and seek elective positions, including seats in Parliament, county assemblies and governorships.

Her declaration comes amid political developments within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following Raila’s death, which has prompted renewed debate about the party’s future leadership and direction.

The Nairobi Senate seat is currently held by Edwin Sifuna, who was elected in 2022 on an ODM ticket. Winnie’s entry could add another prominent contender to the race as political alignments take shape ahead of the next polls.

However, her party ticket and detailed campaign agenda remain unclear.

If elected, Winnie would represent Nairobi County in the Senate, where members legislate on matters affecting counties, participate in revenue-sharing decisions and oversee nationally allocated funds to county governments.give

Her announcement now places the focus on her campaign plans and how she intends to address the needs of Nairobi residents as the country approaches the 2027 elections.
