Wiper Leaders Court Aisha Jumwa for Kalonzo Support
A delegation from the Wiper Party has visited former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa at her home in Malindi to seek her backing for party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s presidential campaign in the next general election.
The team, which included Wundanyi Member of Parliament Danson Mwashako and Kitui Senator Enock Wambua, presented Kalonzo as the strongest choice to head a united opposition effort aimed at unseating President William Ruto. The meeting formed part of wider efforts to strengthen the opposition’s presence along the coast.
Speaking during a church service at Ebenezer Church in Kisumu Ndogo, Malindi, the leaders argued that Jumwa’s experience within the current administration makes her a valuable ally. Senator Wambua encouraged residents to stand with her and praised the step she had already taken. “If you think she deserves leadership, walk with her and support her. Vote for leaders you can relate to. I congratulate Aisha for the bold step she took. You have opened the transfer window, wait and see how many more will follow suit,” he said, adding that the party wants Kalonzo at the front of the opposition.
Jumwa confirmed that several groups have visited her since she left the ruling party and said she will announce her next political direction after completing consultations with different parties. She explained that her decision to pursue the Kilifi governor’s seat stems from a desire to improve leadership in the county, which she believes has not received adequate delivery under the present system. The former cabinet secretary has attracted growing interest since her departure from UDA on 30 July.
Mwashako noted that while he has been travelling with the Linda Mwananchi movement, he is urging people to support Kalonzo for the presidency. He expressed confidence that a partnership with Jumwa would help create a solid team capable of challenging the incumbent. Local ward representative Rashid Odhiambo also stressed the need for the united opposition to settle quickly on a single flag bearer to maximise its chances of success.
The visit highlights ongoing efforts by opposition parties to expand their networks after Jumwa’s high-profile exit. She has cited repeated frustration and humiliation over her gubernatorial ambitions, including an incident in which she was allegedly turned away from State House, as reasons for leaving the ruling side. As more leaders explore alliances ahead of 2027, the coast remains a key focus for those seeking to broaden their support base.
