Charlene Ruto Hosts Glamorous Koito Ceremony in Kilgoris

President William Ruto’s daughter Charlene marked a significant personal milestone on Saturday with a traditional Koito engagement ceremony at the family’s Intonna Heritage Farm in Kilgoris, Narok County.
The expansive property transformed into a vibrant hub of activity as high-profile guests arrived in helicopters and lengthy motorcades, lending an air of grandeur to the cultural occasion. Brown tones dominated the carefully chosen outfits, creating a coordinated and elegant visual theme that complemented the festive atmosphere while honouring heritage.
Among the prominent figures in attendance were Cabinet Secretaries Aden Duale and Kipchumba Murkomen, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, nominated Senator Karen Nyamu, Members of Parliament Felix Odiwuor and Linet Toto, as well as Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris. Their presence, combined with the dramatic arrivals, elevated the traditional gathering into a glamorous event that still kept its cultural foundations firmly in place. The blend of modern status and deep-rooted customs reflected the unique character of the celebration.
Charlene is set to marry Isaya Yunge, a technology entrepreneur known for his work in digital innovation. Described as an optimist and visionary thinker, Yunge has built a reputation through ventures that focus on practical technology solutions. He was recognised among Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30 and earlier received the Queen’s Young Leaders Award in 2018 for creating sustainable digital tools. His path began early, when at the age of seventeen he served as a UNICEF Africa Youth Ambassador and addressed the G8 Summit on issues of child rights.
Yunge’s professional journey includes specialised training in sustainable business models through the Swedish Institute and leadership programmes at Cambridge University and the Harvard Ministerial Leadership Program. He currently leads Goodsam Technologies as founder and chief executive and co-founded Smart Kaya LLC, a company developing hands-free smart speakers designed for homes across the continent. His background brings a forward-looking dimension to the union being celebrated through age-old traditions.
A Koito ceremony holds special meaning within Kalenjin culture as a formal engagement and dowry negotiation event. The name itself translates to “to give away,” and the occasion brings the families of the bride and groom together to finalise the union, discuss bride price, and share in performances, traditional meals, and cultural dress. At Intonna Heritage Farm, these customs unfolded against a backdrop of contemporary elegance, creating a memorable day that balanced heritage with the realities of modern public life.
