Kidjo Makes History With Hollywood Walk of Fame Star

Beninese music icon Angélique Kidjo has etched her name into Hollywood history by becoming the first African musician and the first Black African to receive a star on the Walk of Fame.

The ceremony on August 18 marked a landmark moment for African artists worldwide, with the day officially named in her honor. She received the 2,854th star in recognition of her decades-long career that has blended traditional sounds from her homeland with funk, jazz and pop, earning her five Grammy Awards along the way.

Friends and industry leaders gathered to celebrate her achievement and highlight her influence beyond the stage. Actor Willem Dafoe described her as without a doubt the hardest working woman in show business while praising her kindness, generosity and activism. Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. noted that her work carries a deeper purpose, calling her one of those rare artists whose impact reaches far past performance.

In her own remarks, Kidjo framed the honor as shared rather than personal. She declared that Africans often underestimate what they have given and continue to give the world, insisting that without their contributions no music would be possible on the planet. Reflecting on her journey, she said that as a little girl in Benin she never would have believed such recognition was possible, and she now carries the hopes of her family, her country and generations of African artists with her.

The event also featured a formal proclamation by the president of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce declaring August 18 Angélique Kidjo Day. Notable guests including actor Djimon Hounsou and Nigerian musician Adekunle Gold joined family and friends to witness the unveiling. Producer Ana Martinez praised Kidjo’s extraordinary artistry and global influence that have inspired audiences across generations and continents.

This recognition places Kidjo among a distinguished group of Black artists already honored on the Walk of Fame and serves as a powerful signal to young creatives across Africa. She has long encouraged emerging women artists to remain true to themselves rather than imitate others, and her new star stands as a lasting reminder that bold dreams rooted in authenticity can open doors once thought closed.
