Ethiopia Launches Construction of Africa’s Largest Airport in Ambitious $12.5 Billion Project

Ethiopia has taken a major step forward in its infrastructure development by officially starting work on a new international airport valued at $12.5 billion.

The facility, known as Bishoftu International Airport, is located about 45 kilometers southeast of the capital Addis Ababa near the town of Bishoftu. Construction began in January 2026 following a groundbreaking ceremony attended by high-level officials, including Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. This project is expected to become the biggest airport on the African continent once fully completed.

The initiative is being spearheaded by Ethiopian Airlines, the country’s flagship carrier and one of the largest airlines in Africa. The new airport is designed to eventually replace the existing Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, which has been struggling to keep up with growing passenger numbers and limited space. Plans call for up to four runways and modern terminals capable of handling an initial 60 million passengers per year by 2030, with potential expansion to as many as 110 million annually in later phases. It will also include extensive cargo facilities to support increased freight movement across the region.

This development highlights Ethiopia’s broader goal of becoming a central hub for air travel and trade linking Africa with the rest of the world. By creating a state-of-the-art gateway, the country aims to boost connectivity for both passengers and goods, strengthen its economy, and attract more international airlines and businesses. Ethiopian Airlines will contribute around 30 percent of the funding from its own resources, while the remaining portion is being arranged through partnerships with international lenders and governments, including support from institutions in the United States, China, Europe, and the African Development Bank.

The project is seen as a significant boost for local communities and the national economy, promising new jobs during construction and operation, as well as improved access to global markets. Once operational, the airport could help transform Ethiopia into a key aviation center on the continent, easing pressure on current facilities and supporting long-term growth in tourism, business travel, and logistics. Officials have described it as one of the most important infrastructure efforts in the nation’s history, with expectations that it will open new opportunities for regional integration and economic progress in the years ahead.
