Government Launches Usalama Cover for Police and Prison Officers

The Kenyan government has officially introduced a new medical scheme known as Usalama Cover under the Social Health Authority (SHA).
The programme aims to provide comprehensive healthcare to officers from the National Police Service and the Kenya Prisons Service, along with their families. It is expected to benefit more than 100,000 uniformed officers and their dependants by ensuring faster access to quality medical care and removing previous delays in treatment.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen presided over the launch event held at Avenue Hospital in Nairobi. The initiative falls under the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund and is designed to offer reliable health support to those who serve the nation in security roles. Officials described it as a key step towards improving the welfare of police and prison staff while advancing the broader goal of better healthcare for public servants.
During the launch, Duale and Murkomen firmly dismissed recent claims by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that the Social Health Authority has been used for looting public funds. They described the accusations as unfounded and urged focus on the positive progress being made in expanding medical coverage. The new Usalama Cover is expected to bring peace of mind to officers by guaranteeing uninterrupted access to essential health services when needed.
