Kenya Pays Ksh 3.9 Billion AFCON Hosting Fee to CAF

Kenya has finally paid the Ksh 3.9 billion hosting fee to the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The payment was made to secure the country’s position as co-host of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya confirmed that Kenya has now fully met its financial obligations to CAF.
The country had faced a strict deadline of March 30, 2026, to clear the fee, which is equivalent to about $30 million. Uganda and Tanzania had already paid their shares earlier. There were concerns that failure to pay on time could have put Kenya’s hosting rights at risk. Government officials worked with the National Treasury and Parliament to release the funds through the supplementary budget.
With the payment now complete, Kenya can continue preparations for the 2027 tournament under the “Pamoja 2027” bid. The move brings relief to football fans and stakeholders who were worried about possible loss of the hosting opportunity. Focus now shifts to infrastructure development, including stadium upgrades, to ensure the event is a success when it kicks off in June and July 2027.
