Former United States First Lady Michelle Obama has launched a Sh129 million initiative to support girls’ education in 15 countries, with Kenya among the nations expected to benefit from the funding.

The initiative, implemented through the Obama Foundation’s Girls Opportunity Alliance, will support grassroots organisations working to remove barriers to education through mentorship, leadership development, and community-based programmes.

The funding comes amid persistent challenges affecting girls’ education, including poverty, early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and limited access to secondary schooling.

In Kenya, the initiative could strengthen community-led efforts to keep girls in school, particularly in vulnerable communities. However, details of the specific Kenyan organisations and counties set to receive funding are yet to be confirmed.

The programme is designed to empower adolescent girls by supporting local organisations that understand the challenges facing learners in their communities. Depending on the projects selected, the assistance could help expand access to academic guidance, safe learning environments, and leadership opportunities that enable girls to make informed decisions about their futures.

The initiative also highlights the role of community-based interventions in complementing national education policies. While Kenya continues to pursue the 100 per cent transition policy to ensure learners progress from primary to secondary school, sustained support remains important in helping vulnerable students stay enrolled and complete their studies.
