Nyali MP Mohammed Ali Defects from UDA to United Opposition, Eyes Mombasa Governorship in 2027

Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali has officially left the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) amid growing frustrations with the party's leadership and policies.
Ali cited UDA's alleged intolerance and efforts to hinder his political ambitions as key reasons for the switch. He has now aligned himself with the United Opposition coalition, a move that signals shifting dynamics ahead of the 2027 General Election.
During a roadside rally in Roysambu on February 15, 2026, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua publicly endorsed Ali as the United Opposition's preferred candidate for the Mombasa governorship. Gachagua emphasized that discussions with other opposition figures, including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, would soon determine the specific party ticket Ali would contest under—whether DCP, Wiper, or another agreed-upon vehicle. The announcement positions Ali as a unified opposition challenger to the current Mombasa leadership.
Accepting the endorsement, Ali expressed his readiness to run and pledged to tackle entrenched cartels, rogue elements, and mismanagement in Mombasa County. He highlighted the importance of youth stepping up with principled leadership, declaring his intent to deliver decisive change and rally support to "bring the vote home" for the opposition cause. This development underscores Ali's vocal stance against perceived corruption and factionalism within UDA, where he has previously clashed with figures like Secretary General Hassan Omar.
