The office of ODM Party Leader Dr. Oburu Oginga has moved to quell widespread speculation over his health, dismissing social media reports claiming that the veteran politician has died.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, Dr. Oburu's Secretariat described the reports as malicious propaganda and fake news, insisting that the ODM leader is alive, safe, and in good spirits.

The statement came after unverified claims spread rapidly across social media, triggering concern among ODM supporters and members of the public.

According to his office, the reports were not based on any official communication and were instead being circulated by bloggers seeking attention and traffic online.

The Secretariat said Dr. Oburu was, at the time, the reports emerged, preparing his official speech ahead of a high-profile handover ceremony.

Under doctors' instructions

Dr. Oburu's office acknowledged that the ODM leader has been taking a period of rest following medical advice.

He has been directed by his doctors to limit strenuous physical activity and heavy engagements as he recuperates.

However, the Secretariat said the restrictions have not prevented him from remaining engaged with developments within the party.

It described him as mentally alert and continuing to participate in key party decisions while observing the directives of his doctors.

The office urged ODM members, residents of Siaya County, and Kenyans, generally not to be misled by unverified social media posts.

Warning over fake reports

The Secretariat also issued a warning to bloggers and social media users against spreading false information about Dr. Oburu's health.

It said those seeking to attract attention or make money from sensational claims should be aware that the publication and dissemination of falsehoods and cyber harassment can attract legal consequences.

The office urged the public and media to rely on official channels for information concerning the ODM leader's health and activities.

For now, the Secretariat's position is clear: Dr. Oburu Oginga is alive, safe, and continuing to recover under his doctors' instructions, despite the death reports circulating online.
