Paris Erupts in Chaos After PSG's Champions League Triumph

Paris descended into disorder as thousands of Paris Saint-Germain supporters took to the streets following their penalty shoot-out victory over Arsenal in the Champions League final.
More than 400 people were arrested across France amid widespread clashes with police, who deployed tear gas to regain control in the city center. Celebrations quickly turned unruly, with fireworks, flares, and reports of damaged vehicles, businesses, and public property. This marks the second consecutive year that PSG's European success has been overshadowed by violent fallout.
Thousands of officers were called in to manage the crowds that swarmed iconic spots like the Champs-Élysées shortly after the final whistle. Fans set off pyrotechnics, burned electric bikes, and smashed shop windows in some areas, while public transport services faced major disruptions. Seven police officers were injured during the confrontations, prompting strong condemnation from authorities who described the unrest as completely unacceptable. Earlier in the day, tensions had already flared around giant screens at Parc des Princes.
The French interior minister highlighted the scale of the response needed to contain the situation, noting 280 arrests in Paris alone. Political figures, including Marine Le Pen, criticized the pattern of violence tied to football victories, suggesting it forces many residents to stay indoors for safety. This year's events echo last season's deadly celebrations, which claimed two lives and raised fresh questions about managing large-scale fan gatherings in the capital.
Despite the turmoil, PSG players are scheduled for a victory parade on Sunday, complete with a tour near the Eiffel Tower and a reception with President Emmanuel Macron. While the club celebrates back-to-back European titles, the repeated scenes of chaos have sparked debate about balancing fan passion with public order. For Arsenal supporters and neutral observers, the night offered a bittersweet end to an exciting final overshadowed by events far from the pitch.
