Police Launch Manhunt After More Than 30 Learners get pregnant in webuye
Police in Bungoma County have launched investigations and a manhunt for persons of interest following reports of more than 30 learners affected by teenage pregnancies at Bakisa Secondary School in Webuye.
According to the school’s principal, Ruth Malika, 10 girls are currently pregnant, 13 are young mothers, and another 13 dropped out of school after becoming pregnant. The high number has raised serious concern among parents, teachers and the wider school community about the impact on the girls’ education and wellbeing.
Local authorities have confirmed they are following up on the cases. Webuye East Assistant County Commissioner Emmanuel Kenga said they have a list of the reported incidents and will pursue those responsible, noting that many of the pregnancies involve adults rather than fellow students.
School officials have pointed to challenges such as the lack of a boarding facility, which makes it harder to monitor students. They have called for the establishment of a dormitory to help protect learners and allow them to complete their studies. Parents have also been urged to pay school fees on time and provide better guidance to their children.
