Wanyonyi Eyes Sh12.8 Million After Record 1000m Run

Kenyan star Emmanuel Wanyonyi has captured global attention by smashing the men’s 1,000m world record in his very first attempt at the distance.

The 21-year-old Olympic and world 800m champion clocked an impressive 2:11.83 at the Monaco Diamond League, beating the 27-year-old mark set by fellow Kenyan Noah Ngeny. This breakthrough performance not only highlights his immense talent but also opens the door to substantial financial rewards.

Wanyonyi stands to earn a handsome payout for his achievement. He will receive US$10,000 for winning the race and an additional US$50,000 for setting the new world record from the Diamond League. On top of that, the government’s reward programme for record-breaking athletes could add Sh5 million, pushing his total potential earnings to around Sh12.8 million. “This was the first time I ran the 1,000m, and breaking the world record makes me so happy. I want to thank the other athletes who pushed me to my limit,” Wanyonyi said after the race.

The young runner maintained strong pace throughout, hitting the 800m mark in 1:45.11 before surging to victory. Britain’s Jake Wightman took second place, while Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati finished third. His success has sparked excitement about future possibilities, including a potential challenge to David Rudisha’s long-standing 800m world record. Officials and fans alike are celebrating this as another milestone for Kenyan athletics.

Leaders have poured in praise for the athlete’s dedication. President William Ruto called it “remarkable and phenomenal,” adding, “Wanyonyi’s historic achievement has once again shown the world the strength of Kenyan athletics and made our nation immensely proud.” Other sports officials echoed similar sentiments, viewing the record as inspiration for upcoming major competitions and a testament to hard work and national spirit.
