Western Kenya Leaders Demand Deputy President Slot in 2027

Leaders from Western Kenya have stepped up their campaign for the region to claim the Deputy President position on President William Ruto’s ticket ahead of the 2027 General Election.
They argue that the area’s strong electoral influence and consistent backing of the Kenya Kwanza administration merit a more prominent role at the highest levels of government. This renewed push highlights growing expectations for equitable power-sharing within the ruling coalition as political realignments gain momentum.
The call gained fresh traction during a strategic gathering in Naivasha, which brought together influential figures from the region. Among those in attendance were National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSMEs Wycliffe Oparanya, several governors, and members of the Western Kenya Parliamentary Caucus. The high-level meeting served as a platform to consolidate views and strategize on how best to secure greater representation in the next administration.
Participants emphasized Western Kenya’s reliable support during past elections and its significant voting numbers as compelling reasons for recognition. They believe that placing a leader from the region in the deputy presidency would not only reward loyalty but also ensure that diverse regional interests are better reflected in national decision-making. This position, they contend, would strengthen unity within Kenya Kwanza while addressing long-standing feelings of marginalization in top government appointments.
As the countdown to 2027 intensifies, these developments could reshape coalition dynamics and influence how political parties position themselves. The leaders’ unified front suggests Western Kenya is determined to translate its electoral weight into tangible influence. Observers will be watching closely to see how President Ruto and other senior figures respond to these growing demands in the months ahead.
