29 Governors Risk Being Declared Unfit to Hold Public Office

At least 29 county governors in Kenya could be declared unfit to hold public office if they fail to appear before the Senate County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC).

The committee, chaired by Moses Kajwang’, issued fresh summons on Wednesday, 26 March 2026, ordering the governors to appear on Monday without fail. This follows a long standoff between the Senate and the Council of Governors over accountability for the use of public funds.

The move comes after more than a month of paralysis in oversight activities. CPAC has warned that non-compliance will be treated as contempt of the entire Senate. Consequences could include a Sh500,000 fine, arrest warrants, and a recommendation to Parliament to declare the governors in gross violation of the Constitution. Such a declaration would make them unfit for public office, with lifelong effects. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja was specifically mentioned for missing a previous summons and facing over 30 audit queries on procurement irregularities.

CPAC Chairperson Moses Kajwang’ said there is no other way to exercise oversight and described the threat as serious. Other governors summoned include those from Samburu, Tharaka Nithi, Kisii, Wajir, Kakamega, Homa Bay, Kericho, Kajiado, and several others. The Senate is using its constitutional powers under Article 125 to enforce accountability. Many Kenyans are watching to see whether the governors will appear or if the matter will escalate further in the coming days.
