Bishop John Okude Officially Retires from Anglican Diocese of Katakwa After Nine Years of Service

In a significant transition for the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), Bishop John Okude Omuse has officially retired from his role as the Bishop of the Diocese of Katakwa, marking the end of his nine-year tenure. The retirement became effective on February 28, 2026, following a farewell and thanksgiving service held on November 9, 2025, at St. John’s Cathedral in Katakwa.

Bishop Okude, who turned 65—the mandatory retirement age per ACK guidelines—was consecrated and enthroned as the third Bishop on August 28, 2016, succeeding Rt. Rev. Zack Epus. During the handover ceremony, he formally transferred the instruments of power to the Provincial Secretary, Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph D. Galgalo, paving the way for the election of the diocese's fourth bishop.

Bishop Okude's leadership has been celebrated for its dedication, compassion, and loyalty, as highlighted by dignitaries including Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who joined hundreds of Christians in bidding him farewell. His tenure strengthened the spiritual and social fabric of the Katakwa Diocese, with notable contributions to interfaith unity and community service, particularly in Busia where he led efforts for peaceful coexistence. The retirement service in November was presided over by His Grace the Most Rev. Dr. Jackson Ole Sapit, Archbishop of the ACK, and drew attendees from various walks of life, reflecting the bishop's widespread impact.

With Bishop Okude's departure, the ACK has initiated the process to search for and elect a new bishop to lead the Diocese of Katakwa. This transition is expected to maintain the diocese's momentum in spiritual growth and community outreach. As Bishop Okude steps into a new chapter, well-wishers have expressed gratitude for his exemplary service, wishing him good health and continued blessings in retirement. The Anglican community looks forward to the installation of the fourth bishop, ensuring continuity in the diocese's mission.
