A family in Navakholo constituency, Kakamega County, endured an emotional rollercoaster after mistakenly identifying a body found in River Sasala as that of their son, teacher Dickson Muganda.
he relatives, led by his father Christopher Lutoboloti, had been searching for the Butere Girls School teacher who had not communicated with them for several days. His phone was switched off, heightening fears when a body was discovered floating in the river near their home in Eshikhoni village, Butsotso West ward. Community members and the family believed it was Muganda, prompting swift notifications to authorities.
The situation escalated quickly as news spread through social media and local channels. Muganda’s wife, Agnes Alucheri, posted a farewell message on his Facebook page requesting he rest in peace, while the school principal, Linda Zalo, informed staff, students, and parents of the tragic loss. The report even reached the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). For nearly three days, the family and colleagues mourned what they thought was a heartbreaking end for the dedicated educator.
In a surprising turn of events, Dickson Muganda returned home alive and well on Wednesday morning, leaving everyone stunned. He had been unaware of the chaos until he saw the messages and learned of the false reports. The mix-up was clarified after further verification, bringing immense relief to the family and the entire community. Muganda expressed shock at the events of the previous day upon his safe arrival.
This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges families face when loved ones go missing, even briefly, in the country. It also highlights how quickly misinformation can spread through digital platforms and local networks. The family has since withdrawn the identification statement from DCI officers and the Kakamega mortuary. As normalcy returns to the Muganda household, the episode underscores the importance of thorough verification before public announcements in sensitive matters.
