Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka Leads Community in Mourning 16 Victims of Malaha Road Tragedy
A devastating road accident near Malaha along the Webuye-Kitale highway in Bungoma County claimed the lives of 16 people and left several others seriously injured.
The incident, which occurred on March 9, 2026, involved a trailer that tragically struck pedestrians gathered at the scene of an earlier minor crash, turning a routine evening into a profound loss for many families. Some households suffered multiple bereavements, with reports of entire relatives perishing in the crash, amplifying the grief across the region.
Governor Kenneth Lusaka joined residents, religious leaders, and other community figures in a heartfelt memorial service to honor the deceased and offer solace to the bereaved. During the gathering, he conveyed deep sympathy on behalf of the county, describing the event as a heartbreaking reminder of the fragility of life on Kenya's roads. Lusaka praised the spiritual leaders for their role in organizing the service and providing comfort, while stressing the urgent need for everyone to prioritize road safety through responsible driving and adherence to traffic rules, especially on busy highways prone to such incidents.
In response to the tragedy, the governor announced significant support measures, including the county government's commitment to covering hospital bills for the injured survivors and facilitating specialized treatment where necessary, such as transfers to facilities in Eldoret. He also revealed plans to enhance healthcare infrastructure by installing a CT Scan machine at Webuye Hospital to improve emergency diagnostics and save lives in future crises. Additionally, fundraising efforts led by local leaders raised substantial funds—around Ksh 13.5 million—to assist families with funeral costs and other immediate needs, underscoring a collective effort to aid recovery and prevent similar occurrences through better road measures and preparedness.
