Bungoma Gubernatorial Race Heats Up as Deputy Governor Jenipher Mbatiany Announces 2027 Bid

With Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka entering the final stretch of his second and last term, the contest to succeed him in the 2027 elections is gaining momentum. Several prominent figures have already signaled their interest in the top county seat, including Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, Enock Opara, Dennis Nyongesa, businessman Zacharia Barasa, and others.
The most recent development came when Deputy Governor Jenipher Mbatiany publicly confirmed her intention to run for governor. Speaking to journalists in Bungoma on Friday, February 6, 2026, she addressed circulating online reports from the previous day and declared her firm decision to seek the position. Drawing on her years of service alongside Governor Lusaka, she emphasized that the role has equipped her with deep insight into the county’s pressing issues and untapped potential. Her platform focuses on improving public service delivery, reinforcing the gains of devolution, and promoting transparent and efficient management of county resources.
Mbatiany expressed confidence in her vision for Bungoma’s future, pledging to tour the entire county to rally support and engage directly with residents. She strongly challenged outdated perceptions that women cannot secure or succeed in top elective offices in Western Kenya, describing such beliefs as long-expired myths. Highlighting numerous examples of capable women who have excelled in community, professional, and political roles, she argued that effective leadership depends on vision, integrity, and dedication to service rather than gender. She pointed out that counties led by women have consistently ranked highly in development performance, reinforcing her belief that female leaders are well-positioned to guide wards, constituencies, counties, and even the national level. While she has not yet revealed which political party she will contest under, her entry is expected to significantly intensify the competition for the Bungoma governorship in 2027.
