Court Stops ODM's Move to Remove Edwin Sifuna as Secretary General

Edwin Sifuna, the Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has received a major boost following a ruling by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT).
The tribunal has issued orders temporarily blocking any efforts to remove him from his position, putting on hold a decision made by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). This development provides Sifuna with critical breathing room amid ongoing internal party tensions.
On February 11, 2026, the ODM NEC passed a resolution aimed at ousting Sifuna from his influential role as Secretary General. However, the PPDT has now stayed the implementation of that resolution, preventing it from taking immediate effect. The tribunal’s intervention ensures that no further steps can be taken to enforce the decision until the matter is fully heard and determined.
In addition to halting the resolution’s execution, the tribunal has prohibited the publication of the NEC’s decision in the Kenya Gazette. Such publication would have given the ouster official legal recognition and made it binding. By barring this step, the court has effectively frozen the process, maintaining the status quo for the time being.
The ruling comes as a timely relief for Sifuna, arriving just one day after the NEC publicly announced its intention to remove him. The orders will remain in place pending a full inter partes hearing, where both sides will present their arguments. Until then, Sifuna continues to hold his position as the party’s Secretary General.
