Edwin Sifuna Loses Petition to Block ODM Disciplinary Proceedings

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has suffered a setback after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal refused to stop the Orange Democratic Movement from proceeding with disciplinary action against him.
The tribunal delivered the ruling on Thursday, April 9, 2026. It declined to issue orders that would have temporarily blocked the party’s internal process.
The tribunal, led by acting chairperson Gad Gathu, said it cannot halt the party’s disciplinary proceedings. However, it directed that ODM should not reach any final decision or conclusion from tomorrow’s hearing until the tribunal fully hears and determines Sifuna’s main application. “To ensure fairness, we will not stay any internal process; we will stay any determination until the tribunal delivers a ruling,” Gathu stated.
Sifuna had filed an urgent application seeking to suspend the disciplinary hearing scheduled for Friday, April 10, 2026. The party had issued him a notice to show cause over allegations of gross misconduct, including publicly opposing official party positions. With the tribunal’s decision, the disciplinary committee can now sit as planned, but no removal or final action can be taken until the larger case is resolved. This development keeps the internal conflict within ODM alive as both sides prepare for the hearing.
