Emaase cautions opposition against fuel protests

Teso South MP Mary Emaase has criticized opposition leaders over alleged plans to mobilize youth for protests scheduled for Tuesday 21st April 2026 to demonstrate against the rising cost of fuel in the country.
Speaking to the press, Emaase dismissed the planned demonstrations as misguided, arguing that the increase in fuel prices is not a result of policies by the government led by William Ruto, but rather a consequence of global factors.
She attributed the surge in fuel prices to ongoing geopolitical tensions between Iran and the United States, which she said have disrupted global oil markets and led to higher prices worldwide, including in Kenya.
“It is important for leaders to be honest with the public. The issue of fuel prices is largely driven by global dynamics, not just local decisions. Inciting young people to take to the streets puts them at unnecessary risk,” ~ Mary Emaase.
Also urged young people to avoid participating in the protests and instead allow the government time to address the issue through long-term economic measures.
Her remarks come amid growing public concern over the rising cost of living, with sections of the opposition calling for demonstrations as a way to pressure the government into lowering the prices of essential commodities.
