Families of Malaha Accident Victims Receive KSh 13.5 Million in Aid

The families of those who tragically lost their lives in the devastating Malaha road accident in Webuye, Bungoma County, have received a total of KSh 13.5 million in financial support to help with funeral expenses and immediate needs.

The funds were raised through a well-coordinated effort led by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, alongside several Members of Parliament and other well-wishers. The gesture comes as a show of solidarity with the grieving families following one of the deadliest road crashes in the region this year.

The accident, which occurred earlier this week along the Webuye-Malaha stretch, claimed the lives of 16 people when a matatu collided with an oncoming vehicle. Dozens more were injured, many critically, turning the incident into a national tragedy that highlighted ongoing concerns about road safety on Kenya’s busy highways. Speaker Wetangula, who hails from the area, personally spearheaded the fundraising drive, mobilizing contributions from fellow legislators, local leaders, and compassionate citizens to provide swift relief to the bereaved households.

The KSh 13.5 million disbursement is intended to offer immediate assistance during this difficult period, with calls for continued support as the families navigate long-term challenges. Leaders involved in the initiative have also renewed demands for stricter enforcement of traffic rules, better road maintenance, and improved vehicle standards to prevent such heartbreaking losses in the future. The community in Webuye and surrounding areas has expressed deep appreciation for the timely intervention amid widespread grief.
