Governor Kang’ata’s Driver Shot Amid Political Tour Tensions

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has raised alarm after his driver was shot in the chest during a Linda Mwananchi tour in Nyandarua and Laikipia counties.
The incident occurred on Sunday as the team faced hostility, including being stoned by alleged goons at a church event. Kang’ata described the driver, identified as Gitari, as immobilized with a bullet still lodged in his chest, expressing uncertainty over whether it was live ammunition or a rubber bullet.
The governor recounted how the group had come in peace but encountered violence that included their vehicle being blocked and confiscated in Laikipia. He addressed the media, highlighting the unfortunate turn of events during what was meant to be a routine engagement with residents. This episode adds to the growing concerns over safety and political intolerance in the lead-up to key electoral activities in the region.
The shooting comes against a backdrop of heightened tensions ahead of the Ol Kalou by-election. Kang’ata and his team have been actively involved in opposition-linked initiatives, which seem to have drawn strong reactions from rival groups. Calls for calm and thorough investigations have emerged as authorities look into the circumstances surrounding the attack on the governor’s entourage.
Such incidents underscore the challenges facing political engagement in the country, where differences can quickly escalate into dangerous confrontations. As investigations proceed, leaders across the board are urged to promote peaceful discourse and protect the rights of citizens to participate freely in public affairs without fear of violence.
