Maendeleo Chap Chap Rejects Merger with UDA

Maendeleo Chap Chap Party has firmly declared it will not dissolve or fold into the United Democratic Alliance despite mounting pressure within the ruling coalition

Led by Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua, the party affirmed its commitment to operating as a fully independent entity while remaining a loyal member of the Kenya Kwanza alliance. This decision comes amid recent trends where several smaller parties have merged into UDA ahead of the 2027 General Election, sparking discussions about coalition dynamics and power-sharing arrangements.

In a statement issued after its Governing Council meeting, the party’s Secretary General emphasised that Maendeleo Chap Chap would continue as a freestanding political outfit. It plans to field candidates for various elective positions nationwide, including governors, senators, MPs, women representatives, and county assembly members. The party reiterated its strong support for President William Ruto’s re-election bid and the broader Kenya Kwanza agenda, framing its independence as a way to strengthen rather than weaken the coalition.

The move highlights ongoing debates within Kenya Kwanza about the future structure of the alliance. While some affiliates have chosen to fully integrate into UDA, Maendeleo Chap Chap invoked constitutional freedoms of political association to justify its stance. Party leaders believe maintaining a distinct identity will allow them to mobilise supporters more effectively and contribute unique perspectives to national development goals under the Kenya Kwanza banner.

As political realignments intensify ahead of 2027, this announcement adds an interesting layer to coalition politics. It signals that not all partners are rushing to consolidate under one umbrella, potentially encouraging other smaller parties to assert their autonomy. Observers will be keen to see how this independence plays out in candidate selections and whether it strengthens or tests unity within the broader alliance supporting President Ruto.
