Oburu Odinga To Take Gachagua to Court

Siaya Senator and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Odinga has announced plans to take legal action against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaking at the ODM youth convention in Nairobi on Monday, Oburu strongly denied allegations that he and other party officials had been bribed to sell the ODM party. He described the claims as false and damaging, saying he would not hesitate to drag Gachagua and anyone repeating similar statements to court to clear his name and protect the party’s reputation.
The accusations surfaced in recent weeks amid ongoing political realignments and talks about possible alliances. Gachagua and some opposition figures have claimed that certain ODM leaders accepted money in exchange for shifting the party’s position or working closely with the government. Oburu rejected these suggestions outright, insisting that ODM remains an independent and strong political movement committed to its founding principles and its supporters. He emphasised that no amount of money could make him or genuine party members betray the trust placed in them by millions of Kenyans.
The remarks come at a time when political tensions are high, with different factions positioning themselves ahead of future elections. ODM has been a major player in Kenyan politics for many years, and any suggestion that the party is for sale has angered many of its loyal members. Oburu used the youth convention to rally supporters, calling on them to stay united and ignore attempts to divide the party through rumours and unfounded claims.
Legal experts note that such defamation cases can be complex, often requiring proof of false statements made publicly with the intention to harm someone’s reputation. As Oburu prepares to pursue the matter in court, many observers are watching to see how this latest political disagreement unfolds. The development adds to the already lively debate within opposition circles and highlights the deep divisions that continue to shape Kenyan politics. For now, Oburu’s firm response sends a clear message that he intends to defend both his personal integrity and the future of the ODM party.
