Over 150 Families in Mt Elgon Left Homeless After Floods Destroy Homes and Crops Helped.

More than 150 families living in Chesiywo, Kapkrong, and Kimama villages within Mt Elgon Constituency, Bungoma County, are now homeless and in urgent need of help following destructive flash floods caused by heavy rains.

The raging waters swept away their houses, washed away food crops in the fields, and left many residents with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. The affected families have been forced to seek temporary shelter wherever they can find it, as they struggle to recover from the sudden disaster.

One of the victims, Edwin Kibet, narrated how his entire house collapsed and all his crops were destroyed, leaving him with losses amounting to more than KSh 150,000. He expressed deep disappointment that despite repeated promises by leaders to relocate them to safer ground and plant trees to control soil erosion, little has been done over the years. The community is now pleading with both the national and county governments to intervene quickly by providing immediate relief, helping them rebuild, and finding a permanent solution to prevent such flooding in the future.

Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli, together with the Kenya Red Cross, stepped in to support the affected families by donating mattresses, cooking utensils, beddings, and tents on March 16, 2026. The senator also called on the county government’s department of special programmes to move fast and provide more comprehensive assistance. This flooding incident is part of the wider heavy rains affecting different parts of Kenya, which have already claimed many lives and displaced thousands of people across the country. Residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas have been urged to remain alert and move to safer places as more rain is still expected.
